Tembeka is a wholesale development finance company, unique in the South African development mfi (micro finance institutions) sector, which has proved its ability to address social finance issues in a relevant, efficient and sustainable manner.
Tembeka aims to bring relevant and affordable finance to poor communities for productive purposes through a lively chain of financial solidarity (cfs) which it has been establishing over the last six years. Tembeka, the catalyst in the cfs provides wholesale loans to development micro finance organisations that in turn provide smaller loans to the final users of the funds. They comprise mainly of women (80%); funds are used for job creation, entrepreneurship, building incremental housing and small-scale farming.
Tembeka’s Managing Director, Michael Brand, one of the founders of Tembeka has been working in the development finance field for the past sixteen years. Michael serves on the Board of MAIN (Microfinance African Institutions Network) representing Southern Africa. Tembeka has one other full-time staff member and is planning to fill two additional posts this year. To complement the efforts of its staff Tembeka works in partnership with DGRV and The Yebo Fund, SIDI and committed volunteers.
Tembeka has an authorised share capital of 10 million shares of which 3.7 million has been issued. Investments are invited in the form equity, soft loans or grants from partners, institutions and individuals that identify with its vision and mission. Tembeka has earned the trust of investors and partners: SIDI (France), Etimos (Italian), Cordaid (Dutch), DGRV (Germany) including a few South African institutions and 40 individuals.
On the Tembeka client side it has established partnerships with key role players in development finance across rural and urban South Africa e.g. Small Enterprise Foundation, The Kuyasa Fund, Women’s Development Business, Beehive Group / Indlu Finance, Tsoga Finance and Tetla finance. Tembeka’s mfi partners serve estimated 75’000 clients and manage a collective loan book of +/- R99 million with an average loan size of R1,320 and an average repayment rate of 97%.
